Skiing with the family is a memorable experience… but also a budget that can quickly add up between passes, rentals, accommodation and gear. To stay within your envelope without cutting back on quality, the choice of resort makes all the difference.
Some Alpine resorts stand out for their family commitment: free passes up to age 5, snow gardens, safe play areas, accessible ski schools, and prices that are easier to stomach than in the major international destinations. Several are Famille Plus labelled, a sign of services designed with children in mind.
Here’s our selection of 6 affordable, family-friendly Alpine resorts, from the north to the south of the Alps. All are Passe Montagne partners: subscribers enjoy discounts on passes of up to -40% depending on the resort.
1. Chamrousse (Isère, Belledonne)
30 minutes from Grenoble, Chamrousse is an ideal gateway for families discovering skiing. The resort offers free passes for under-5s, a real budget boost for siblings.
For lessons, the Babysnow ESF combines lessons and childcare from age 3, supervised by specially trained instructors. Several themed zones dot the area: Téo’s Mountain near the Eterlou run for the youngest, Enigma’Ski (a ski treasure hunt) for confirmed children, and the Luge Park or the Tube Park for fun off the skis.
The area is well sized for beginner-to-intermediate levels, and its closeness to Grenoble makes it a destination you can reach without a long journey — ideal for a family weekend too.

A philosophy reflected in very modest prices and a simple, friendly atmosphere, miles away from the big international resorts. The area has 60 km of pistes perfectly suited to families, with a majority of green and blue runs, and excellent snow cover (north-facing, altitude 1,600-2,520 m). Children enjoy the snow garden, the childcare, the ESF clubs and several play areas dedicated to them.
Off-snow: sledding, swimming, ice rink, snowshoeing… Most activities are within walking distance of the accommodation, which simplifies things when you have young children.
4. Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval – Grand Massif (Haute-Savoie, Faucigny)
Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval offers an authentic setting at the foot of the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, in the Giffre valley. The local area, made up entirely of green and blue runs, is tailor-made for children and beginners.
For more experienced skiers or teens stepping up a level, the Grand Massif (one of France’s largest linked areas, with Flaine, Samoëns, Morillon and Les Carroz) is 10 minutes away by shuttle.
Beyond skiing, the village offers snowshoeing, nature walks, and a chance to discover preserved wildlife in the Sixt-Passy nature reserve. Prices there remain more affordable than in the star resorts of Haute-Savoie.
5. Les Orres (Hautes-Alpes, Embrunais)
In the Southern Alps, Les Orres enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year and quality snow cover thanks to its altitude (1,550 - 2,720 m). The area features over 100 km of pistes across all levels, making it a destination where the whole family finds their playground.
The youngest enjoy the snow garden and the kids’ club, supervised by teams trained to welcome little ones. Off-snow, the offer is rich: rail sled, giant zip line, ice rink, sledding areas, and even a cinema in the resort on bad-weather days.
This is typically the resort that lets you mix lessons for the children with technical terrain for teens or skiing parents, without changing area.
6. Pralognan-la-Vanoise (Savoie, Vanoise)
In the heart of the Vanoise National Park, Pralognan is an authentic village-resort, labelled Famille Plus, a world away from the major high-altitude resorts of the Tarentaise. A human-sized area, perfect for learning, with runs suited to every entry-level skier.
